GROUND WATER MODEL
During the first year of promoting WaterFind, we exhibited at numerous Farm shows, Municipal meetings and Real Estate seminars and found ourselves answering two questions repeatedly. “What do we think in Witching?” and “Can you find underground rivers and streams?” As to the “Witching” our standard response is “It can’t hurt, and it might help.” and than we told people that it has not been proven to be more accurate than picking a spot by chance. To the underground rivers and streams question (often spoken of by witches and dowsers) we said yes we can, but it was somewhat difficult to try and change peoples perception of how groundwater typically worked. Admittedly at one time we had similar perception. We would try to explain that underground rivers and streams were not very prevalent in most of Western Canada though there were occurrences. Rather groundwater was most often found and developed by drilling into “aquifers”, i.e. formations containing water usually consisting of porous materials such as glacial till, sand or gravel, or fractured rock formations. After that first season of shows and presentations we went on line hunting for something that would make the explanation process easier and quicker for the next show season. We found Envisions Groundwater Model. It works great for us. It’s a working model of the Water Cycle showing a cross section of different types of underground formations, aquifers, wells, a pond fed by springs, works with simulated rain and shows how aquifers recharge. It even contains a septic field and a leaky buried tank and with a few drops of colored dye, shows how easily groundwater gets contaminated. It is a great educational tool not just for students we found, as even realtors and councilors were impressed with the model and how it worked. We only use the model at shows and the odd municipal meeting which is only a few times a year so in the interest of education and the the importance of protecting our water resources we are making the model available to teachers or other organizations for educational use in Southern and Central Alberta (It can be picked up in SE Calgary). You can see how it works on Envisions Website. We do provide an instructional DVD to show you how to operate it and in the winter, when we are a little slower, we will even help set it up at nearby rural schools. If you would like to book the model (maximum of 1 week) drop us an email well in advance and we will make arrangements from there (Please note that rural schools take priority).
